Italy’s sunny skies and sea breezes make it an obvious place for renewable energy development. But a number of development headwinds — like inefficient permitting processes, lengthy environmental reviews, and long interconnection queue wait times — have significantly hampered the rate of development for utility-scale clean energy projects. If Italy is to meet its climate targets, there is no doubt that clean energy buildout in the country must accelerate significantly.
Thankfully, many of the roadblocks that have hampered Italy’s renewables sector are beginning to be addressed through recent regulatory initiatives. These efforts should collectively help expand Italy’s renewable development pipeline over time — and open up opportunities for developers and corporate PPA buyers in the country.
